The Trust for North Africa, a regional cooperation programme hosted by DCAF – The Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance invites you to submit your application for the tender below for a Junior Consultant specialised in Security Sector Governance, and Political Economy in North Africa, to contribute to its various initiatives in the MENA Region.

The Junior Consultant will support the TFNA team and contribute to the implementation of projects. This position is open for a registered consultant, preferably based in Geneva, for a maximum of 60 days over a period of 6 months.

Scope of Work

During the assignment, the Junior Consultant is expected to:

  • Undertake and support others in scoping analyses, literature, and desk reviews, in particular drawing upon a range of sources with an emphasis on academic literature and media;
  • Contribute to data gathering and data analysis and write-up;
  • Provide assistance in the development of research outputs such as policy briefs, briefing notes, presentations, empirical papers, and other research outputs;
  • Help design research activities, including developing robust research methodologies and instruments, clear terms of reference and engagement schemes;
  • Contribute to data gathering and analysis as well as results write-up;
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of academic events organized by DCAF, which may include but are not limited to conferences, seminars, and research meetings.
  • Lead in the development and maintenance of databases (e.g. database of partners, conferences, experts) for the expansion of networks;
  • Contribute to the dissemination of fundings and the communications of lessons learned to various audiences;
  • Perform such other functions as may be assigned by the project team and related to the functions enumerated above.

Description of Education, Competence, and Required Experience

  • Completed Masters ‘degree or PHD candidate in economics, social sciences, public policy and/or international development policy with a focus on research;
  • Relevant experience designing and implementing research projects using qualitative and quantitative methods, ideally involving experience in applied econometric analysis of social, economic, and development indicators;
  • Excellent Arabic and English language skills, at native level, capacity to deliver at academic standard and to access and summarize information in Arabic; with French as an additional advantage;
  • Thematic familiarity with public finance, governance and institutions, political economy, and /or security sector governance;
  • A background in international development issues in North Africa a strong advantage
  • Project management experience is an advantage;
  • Graphics presentation and research communication skills are an advantage;
  • Excellent organizational skills and capacity to deliver outputs with minimal supervision and to contribute effectively to processes;
  • Able to work independently in a remote setting.

Evaluation of Applicants: Applicants will be evaluated against qualifications and the competencies specified for each thematic area/subcategory and the level of requested fees.

Samples of previous work can be requested, and interviews may be conducted as per the needs.
