Job Title: Regional Communications Coordinator – Africa

Location: Nigeria

Function

  • The Regional Communications Coordinator will play a key role in developing and implementing strategic communication plans to enhance the visibility and reputation of Heifer International within the designated region.
  • This individual will be responsible for cultivating media relationships, creating compelling content, and ensuring Heifer’s visibility at various events and forums.
  • The Regional Communications Coordinator will work closely with internal teams, country offices, and external partners to ensure consistent messaging and alignment with Heifer’s mission and values.
  • The role may be located in any of the following countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Malawi, Senegal, Uganda, Rwanda or Zambia.

Responsibilities & Deliverables

  • Execute regional communications strategies and plans in alignment with Heifer Africa’s communication objectives.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with local and regional media outlets, journalists, bloggers, and influencers to generate positive coverage of Heifer’s programs, initiatives, and impact stories.
  • Create compelling content, including press releases, media pitches, feature articles, op-eds, and blog posts, to showcase Heifer’s work and engage target audiences.
  • Coordinate media visits, interviews, and press conferences to amplify Heifer’s key messages and promote awareness of our mission and programs.
  • Monitor media coverage and track PR metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of communication efforts and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide support for Heifer spokespersons in the region to represent the organization effectively at public events, conferences, meetings, and media interviews.
  • Manage Heifer Africa’s external facing digital platforms including website, social media, newsletters and magazines among others.
  • Collaborate with program teams, country offices, and partner organizations to identify and leverage storytelling opportunities that highlight Heifer’s impact on beneficiaries and communities.
  • Provide Communications guidance, support, and training to staff and partners, ensuring consistent messaging and branding across all communication channels.
  • Stay informed about regional trends, issues, and news relevant to Heifer’s work, and proactively identify opportunities to leverage media and communications channels to advance our mission.
  • Manage crisis communications and reputational risks as needed, working closely with the Africa communications team and senior leadership to address challenges and protect Heifer’s reputation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in public relations, media relations, or corporate communications, with a proven track record of success in securing media coverage and building relationships with journalists and media outlets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives, press releases, and other PR materials.
  • Understanding of cultural nuances and sensitivities within the region to ensure communication strategies are culturally appropriate and resonate with diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and teams across different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Creative thinker with the ability to generate innovative ideas and strategies for engaging target audiences and promoting Heifer’s mission.
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Proficiency in media monitoring and PR analytics tools.
  • Familiarity with digital communication tools and platforms, including social media, email marketing, website management, online engagement strategies, design tools and digital marketing trends.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address challenges, navigate complex situations, and find creative solutions.
  • Leadership qualities to inspire and motivate teams, provide direction, and foster a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Capability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including donors, partners, government officials, community leaders, and beneficiaries, to build strong relationships and support Heifer’s communication objectives.

Essential Job Requirements:

  • Regular travel within the designated region or to other locations for meetings, events, or media engagements may be required.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, timelines, and circumstances, adjusting Communications strategies and tactics as needed to achieve objectives.
  • Keen attention to detail in all aspects of Communications activities, including writing, editing, proofreading, and reviewing materials for accuracy and consistency.
  • Ability to manage Communication agencies and budgets effectively, maximizing resources to achieve desired outcomes.
