ALIMA in Ethiopia

At the end of March 2022, ALIMA visited Ethiopia for the first time to develop official contacts and gather enough information to set up an ALIMA mission in the country. At the end of May 2022, ALIMA conducted and exploratory mission in the Afder zone in order to better understand the context, and to assess the health and nutrition needs, to identify the need for a humanitarian intervention. ALIMA did the same in early 2023 in Afar region, zone 2 and Zone 4. Three woredas were targeted in Afder: Hargele, Barey and Elkare, and one in Zone 2 (Afar region): Berahile.

ALIMA is planning to set up a new mission in Ethiopia. Being a new country of intervention, ALIMA is looking for a new team to guarantee the implementation of a new project as well as all administrative and logistical requirements to establish ALIMA in the country. This position will be based in Afder zone (Harguele town) and will ensure the implementation of the ALIMA program, will ensure a smooth beginning of operations on the ground.

The main activities to come will consist of :

In the short-term: in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, implement a project contributing to the reduction of morbidity and mortality of communities affected by the drought.

In the mid-to-long term: ensure the follow-up of the first project, develop partnerships with key stakeholders (MoH, civil society, research institutes…), participate to the extension of the project in response to assessments conducted in areas with acute humanitarian needs and launch new activities.

Mission Location: Ethiopia, Somali region , Afder Zone , Harguélé town , with frequent travels to other project areas.

FUNCTIONAL AND HIERARCHICAL LINKS

  • You report to the Project Coordinator (hierarchical Manager) and the Medical Coordinator (technical Manager)
  • You collaborate with all the projects team and the Coordination Team

MISSION AND MAIN ACTIVITIES

You are responsible for implementing medical activities in your area of intervention. You ensure that the project’s resources are used appropriately, and take part in defining your base’s strategy.

You support the medical and paramedical teams in developing their skills.

  • Definition of the project’s medical objectives and intervention strategies
  • Organization, analysis and management of the project’s medical activities
  • Supervision and training of the project’s medical human resources
  • Implementation of project staff health policies
  • Participation in the prevention of abuse of power and sexual and gender-based violence (PSEA)

PROTECTION OF BENEFICIARIES AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Level 3: As part of his/her duties, the incumbent will visit programs and come into contact with children and/or vulnerable adults. Therefore, a criminal record check or a certificate of good character will be required. In situations where a criminal record check or character reference is not possible, a declaration of honour will be requested.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

You have a medical diploma (a paramedical diploma would be essential), Master’s degree in public health

You have experience in tropical medicine, or post-registration experience in Public Health, obs and gynae, paediatrics, A&E, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS/STDs, TB, general practice, general medicine or minor surgery.

You have experience in medical Practice, previous experience in humanitarian context and experience of team management and supervision.

You have analytical and organisational skills, a critical mind and the ability to put forward proposals, as well as the ability to work as part of a team in a multicultural context.

Experience in SRH and MHPSS is an asset

LANGUAGE:

A strong command of both spoken and written English is essential for this position; proficiency in Arabic would be considered an asset.

CONDITIONS

  • Contract term: Contract under French law; contract length: 6 months (renewable, based on funding availability and performance)
  • Position to be filled: ASAP
  • Salary: depending on experience + per diem

ALIMA pays for:

  • Travel costs between the expatriate’s country of origin and the mission location
  • Accommodation costs
  • Medical cover from the first day of the contract to a month after the date of departure from the mission country for the employee and his/her family
  • Evacuation of the employee
