MSF Switzerland (MSFCH) is a humanitarian medical organization providing emergency medical aid to populations in need based in Dagahaley and Mombasa County.

The position is open to Kenyan nationals only. The selected candidate will be reporting to the Medical Activity Manager.

Main Purpose

Provide outpatient and/or inpatient medical care to patients/beneficiaries according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, MSF protocols, values, and universal hygiene standards to improve the patients/beneficiaries’ health conditions.

Accountabilities

• Apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnose and prevention. Carry out outpatient and inpatient consultations, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols.

• Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, checking they have understood.

• Follow up the evolution of the hospitalized patients, through daily visits, consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following MSF protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other departments – in collaboration with other doctors- and informing their family about the patient’s evolution.

• Check and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and take care the quality, disinfection and sterilization of the medical material. Assure general compliance with standing hygiene standards.

• Participate in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the line manager or project coordinator about any problem or complication of the patients’ illness, medical error and monitors the proper functioning of the department, equipment or material.

• Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care.

• Knows and ensures all MSF medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control. Ensures professional confidentiality is respected.

• Manage the team under his/her direct responsibility according to MSF HR policies and procedures, supervising their performance, organizing and scheduling shifts and rotations, directly participating in emergencies and on calls if necessary.

• This position requires to work on shifts plus being on-call, rotational in all departments either in IPD or ER/OPD including paediatrics, ITFC, maternity, adult ward, NBU, ICU and other (isolation, outbreak responses like the cholera treatment centre)

• Ensure proper triaging, timely consultations and interventions of patients in the clinical setting where the MD is designated to work.

• Being able to support in theatre according to the procedures approved in our facility (basic c-section, genital tract tears during delivery, abscess drainage, debridement, burns)

• In some occasions stabilize trauma cases in theatre (gunshot wounds and others) before referring.

• Support in maternity in coordination with the maternity supervisor in case of difficult deliveries, procedures as MVA, support in high-risk clinic.

• Filling of P3 forms for violent and SGBV cases

• Identify cases for referral following the referral SOP and discuss with MAM

• Identify cases in need of x-ray and ultrasound and send for investigations

• Ensure on the job training for clinical officers, participate in giving CME’s and bring topics for training.

• Participate in improving quality of care activities like mortality and morbidity reviews, audits, rational prescription and other.

• Participate in regular meetings; handover meetings, MD/CO/MAM meeting or any other related or requested by the supervisor.

• Inform line manager by any outbreak related diagnosis as suspected measles, cholera, polio etc.

• Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPEs) provided by the facility when attending patients.

• Following of MSF protocols and guidelines

• Perform any other duties requested by your line manager.

Requirements

Education

  • Medical Doctor Diploma with valid license to practice in Kenya. Desirable: Diploma in Tropical Medicine.

Experience

  • Two years of experience (minimum) as a Medical Doctor or in clinical work (can be within medical training). Desirable: Experience in tropical medicine, or post-registration experience in public health, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS/STDs, TB, general practice, general medicine, or minor surgery.

Languages

  • Mission language essential (English). Local language desirable (Kiswahili, Somali).

Knowledge

  • Essential computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel)
