Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The main documents outlining the mandate of the organization are the Vancouver Declaration on Human Settlements, the Habitat Agenda, the Istanbul Declaration on Human Settlements, the Declaration on Cities and Other Human Settlements in the New Millennium, and UN General Assembly Resolution A/56/206. Planning, finance and Economy Section (PFES) The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production and skills centre of UN-Habitat, that develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practice. It provides technical and policy advice approaches and methodologies to MCOs/CO, government and partners and mainstreams them throughout the programme portfolio. It also ensures that the cross-cutting area of safety and the social inclusion issues of human rights; gender; children, youth and older persons; and disability are developed and mainstreamed across the Agency. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section is responsible for coordinating the Agency’s substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance and economy. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures and practices at global, regional, national and sub-national levels. The consultant will support the healthy cities workstream under the section and the Young Gamechangers Initiative (YGI). The YGI is a project focusing on young people’s health and wellbeing through their engagement in urban decisions and the use of digital technologies in Senegal, India and Colombia. Why are consultants needed? UN-Habitat requires a consultant to work on healthy cities and public space across the Planning Finance and Economy projects. Supervision The Consultant will be under the overall leadership of the Leader, Planning, Finance and Economy Section and report to the Manager of the Young Gamechangers Initiative. Specific Responsibilities • Provide planning and design inputs to ongoing planning initiatives, including citywide and site-specific assessments • Develop clear design proposals, drawings and related reports for partner cities. • Review of technical work prepared by local planners in Colombia, India and Senegal • Develop critical analysis of existing planning documents and instruments. • Provide inputs to guides, policy briefs and normative outputs • Facilitate training of trainings and community participation workshops for YGI. • Provide inputs into PFES publications and documents • Deliver training to partners on urban health and the global public space methodologies and approaches.
Qualifications/special skills
A first -level University degree in Architecture or Urban Planning or related field that is relevant for sustainable urban development and urban health is required. Two (2) years’ experience in urban planning and design with direct proven experience in drawing and preparing plan graphical material using computer assisted design tools.Strong graphic representation skills is required Good hand drawing / sketching is an advantage. Strong graphic representation skills are required.
Languages
English and French are the working knowledge of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of any another UN language is an added advantage.
