NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, emergency food security, and water, sanitation and hygiene sectors.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Shelter Technical Assistant

Generic Responsibilities

  • Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
  • Assist with the implementation of the support function portfolio according to plan of action
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
  • Ensure proper filing of documents 
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement of the support function

Specific Responsibilities 

  • Assist in conducting technical assessments for shelter needs, damage levels, and site suitability, including mapping and layout design.
  • Provide on-site supervision and technical guidance during the construction or rehabilitation of shelters, ensuring compliance with standards and specifications.
  • Track the delivery and usage of shelter materials and ensure that construction quality meets minimum standards, including Sphere or national shelter guidelines.
  • Support community mobilization, provide technical advice to beneficiaries, and help train local laborers or contractors in construction techniques and safety.
  • Maintain daily records, contribute to progress reports, and provide timely feedback on project implementation challenges or successes to the Shelter Officer or Engineer.
  • With the support of the Shelter Officer and Shelter team lead, provide the drafts of technical drawings, Bill of Quantity, site plan and technical specification notes for shelter projects.
  • Maintain good working relationships with local authorities, local communities, local committees and partners as well as with all stakeholders in NRC area of intervention
  • Represent NRC in field coordination meeting when required.
  • Any other Tasks assigned by Line manager

Qualifications

  • University degree in civil engineering or architecture
  • Knowledge of the context in North Eastern Nigeria
  • Knowledge of the local language , Hausa 
  • Experience on implementation of emergency shelter activities and other civil constructions
  • Experience in household sensitization and training in shelter and infrastructure maintenance
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, GPS, ARC GIS and Google Earth
  • Handling insecure environment
  • Planning and delivering results

  • Communicating with impact and respect.
