Job Title: Safeguarding Gender and Inclusion Officer
Location: Abuja
Job Summary
- As part of our commitment to creating inclusive and safe learning environments, we are recruiting a Gender, Inclusion, and Safeguarding Officer to support the integration of gender-responsive, disability-inclusive programming and safeguarding measures in our projects.
- We are therefore seeking a passionate and proactive Gender, Inclusion, and Safeguarding Officer to ensure that YAI’s youth empowerment programs are gender-sensitive, inclusive, and aligned with safeguarding policies.
The officer will:
- Provide technical support to partners for the conduct of gender analysis and developing inclusion strategies.
- Support the integration of gender-transformative approaches into program design and delivery (i.e. design guidelines for use by partners)
- Monitor and report on gender equality and safeguarding compliance (develop indicators for gender and disability inclusion and support partners to track and report on these).
- Develop guidelines (including monitoring mechanisms) for the meaningful inclusion of marginalized youth (adolescent girls and young women, persons with disabilities, nursing mothers, survivors of gender based violence etc).
- Design and facilitate awareness-raising activities and capacity-building efforts, targeting partners and participating young people, on gender, disability inclusion, safeguarding and the Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (PSEAH).
- This role involves collaborating across departments and providing advisory support to implementing partners, ensuring that our projects are safe, inclusive, and impactful for all youth participants.
Key Responsibilities
Gender & Inclusion:
- Provide technical support to integrate gender-transformative approaches into program design and implementation.
- Conduct gender analysis and assess barriers to inclusion in youth skills development programs.
- Develop and facilitate training on gender equality and inclusion for project staff, implementing partners, and youth trainers.
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of programs on young women, persons with disabilities, and refugee youth.
- Support the development of gender and inclusion strategies at both programmatic and organizational levels.
Disability inclusion:
- Support partners to identify Organisations of Persons with Disability (OPDs) in project locations to collaborate with in identification, screening and enrolment of young persons with disabilities that will participate in the program.
- Collaborate with OPDs and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate disability sensitisation sessions for staff and young people in project sites, to ensure that the training environment is safe for young people with disabilities.
- Collaborate with OPDs to ensure that reasonable accommodations are provided for effective participation of young people with disabilities in the training programmes.
Safeguarding & Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (PSEAH):
- Ensure that all staff, partners, and project participants adhere to YAI’s safeguarding policies.
- Develop and facilitate safeguarding training sessions for partners and staff.
- Support the development and implementation of localized safeguarding referral systems.
- Serve as a trusted safeguarding focal point for receiving reports and supporting survivors of SEAH incidents.
- Work with teams to monitor and improve safeguarding systems and ensure compliance with organizational policies.
Program implementation, Monitoring & Learning:
- Provide oversight of entire project activities happening in the area of duty station
- Contribute to project reports and document lessons learned, best practices, and recommendations.
- Participate in coordination meetings and workshops to strengthen gender and inclusion strategies.
- Support partners in ensuring gender-sensitive data collection, reporting, and analysis.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Gender Studies, Sociology, International Development, or a related field (Master’s degree is an advantage).
- At least 5 years of experience in gender equity, inclusion, and safeguarding within skills development, entrepreneurship, or education programs.
- Experience working with vulnerable youth, women, and persons with disabilities in community-based initiatives.
- Knowledge of safeguarding frameworks, gender mainstreaming, and PSEAH best practices.
- Experience conducting gender analysis and integrating inclusive programming.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent training and facilitation skills (experience delivering gender and safeguarding training is an advantage).
- Strong communication and advocacy skills to engage with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong report writing skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Languages: Fluency in English and at least one local language is required.
