Job Title: Quarry Chemist

Job Overview

  • The Quarry Chemist in a cement manufacturing plant is responsible for monitoring and ensuring the chemical consistency and quality of raw materials used in cement production.
  • The chemist conducts various tests, analyzes samples from the quarry, and ensures that the materials meet the required specifications for cement manufacturing.
  • This role plays a critical part in optimizing the production process and ensuring product quality, while maintaining compliance with environmental and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities
Chemical Analysis and Testing:

  • Perform chemical analyses on raw materials such as limestone, clay, shale, and other quarry outputs.
  • Test samples from different quarry locations to ensure uniformity and adherence to the cement plant’s quality standards.
  • Use techniques such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF), wet chemistry, and titration to determine material composition.

Process Control:

  • Collaborate with the quarry and production teams to monitor the quality of raw materials being supplied to the plant.
  • Adjust chemical compositions by blending materials to meet the required specifications for cement production.
  • Provide guidance on the quality of extracted materials to ensure consistency in cement manufacturing.

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Prepare and maintain detailed records of laboratory results, ensuring all data is accurately recorded and stored for reference.
  • Generate regular reports on the quality of raw materials and submit findings to the Quality Control and Production departments.
  • Ensure that all testing procedures comply with ISO, ASTM, or other applicable standards.

Quality Assurance and Problem Solving:

  • Investigate any discrepancies in material quality and recommend corrective actions to maintain production standards.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to identify potential process improvements for enhanced material utilization and cost efficiency.
  • Conduct root cause analyses for any quality-related issues.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all laboratory and testing activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Assist in maintaining the plant’s adherence to environmental policies, especially concerning material waste and emissions.

Calibration and Maintenance:

  • Calibrate laboratory instruments and ensure that testing equipment is well-maintained and operates efficiently.
  • Manage laboratory supplies and ensure that required reagents and consumables are always available for testing.

Training and Development:

  • Provide training and guidance to laboratory technicians and production staff on material testing, analysis, and quality control measures.
  • Stay updated with the latest techniques and advancements in quarry chemistry and material analysis to continually improve laboratory practices.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should possess an HND / B.Sc. / MSc. in Chemistry or related field
  • Minimum of 6 years relevant experience in a quarry or cement manufacturing environment (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of chemical analysis techniques and equipment used in cement production.
  • Proficiency with laboratory instruments such as XRF, PGNAA, and titration.
  • Knowledge of quality control standards, such as ISO or QMS.
