Job Title: Protection Officer
Location: Maiduguri, Borno

Job Purpose
- The Protection Officer will be responsible for integrating protection principles into Health, Nutrition, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programming.
- This role ensures that interventions are designed and implemented in a way that upholds the safety, dignity, and rights of the affected populations while minimizing risks of harm and maximizing the engagement of vulnerable groups including persons with disability.
Responsibilities
Protection Mainstreaming in Program Design and Implementation:
- Ensure that protection principles (do no harm, non-discrimination, meaningful access, accountability, and participation) are integrated into all health, nutrition, and WASH activities.
- Collaborate with program teams to identify and address potential protection risks associated with project activities.
- Develop and implement strategies to promote inclusivity and accessibility of services for marginalized groups, including women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
Training and Capacity Building:
- Conduct training sessions and workshops for health, nutrition, and WASH staff on protection mainstreaming, social cohesion and the importance of incorporating protection principles into their daily work.
- Develop training materials, guidelines, and tools to support protection mainstreaming in the field.
- Build the capacity of local partners and community-based organizations on protection mainstreaming practices.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Work with the M&E team to develop indicators and tools for monitoring protection outcomes within health, nutrition, and WASH programs.
- Conduct regular field visits to monitor the protection aspects of ongoing projects, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement.
- Collect and analyse data related to protection mainstreaming to inform program adjustments and improvements.
Coordination and Advocacy:
- Represent the organization in protection, health, nutrition, and WASH cluster meetings, ensuring that protection concerns are raised and addressed in sector coordination efforts.
- Liaise with government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to advocate for protection-sensitive programming and policy development.
- Coordinate with the Protection Manager and Protection Coordinator and other relevant departments to align protection mainstreaming efforts with overall organizational strategies.
Reporting and Documentation:
- Prepare regular reports on protection mainstreaming activities, challenges, and achievements.
- Document and share best practices, lessons learned, and case studies related to protection in health, nutrition, and WASH programming.
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies and donor requirements in all protection mainstreaming activities.
Other Activities:
- Carry out all tasks respecting key protection principles, including but not limited to:
- Do not harm.
- Non-discrimination.
- Confidentiality.
- Accountability and,
- Need-to-know principles.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences, International Development, Public Health, or a related field. A master’s degree is an asset.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in protection, human rights, or a related field, with specific experience in health, nutrition, and WASH sectors.
- Strong understanding of protection principles and international standards.
- Experience in designing and implementing protection mainstreaming strategies.
- familiarity with the humanitarian coordination system, particularly health, nutrition, and WASH clusters.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and relevant project management software.
- Previous experience working in emergency or conflict settings.
- Knowledge of local context and languages (Fluency in English, Kanuri, and Hausa).
- Capacity to work under pressure.
- Commitment to INTERSOS principles.
