Organization: Concern on Climate Change for the Community Initiative (FOURCi)
Location: Borno State, Nigeria
Position: Project Coordinator
Duration: 6 months
About FOURCi:
Concern on Climate Change for the Community Initiative (FOURCi) is a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the urgent challenges posed by climate change, with a special focus on its impacts within Adamawa State. Our mission is to foster resilient communities through sustainable environmental practices and to be at the forefront of emergency responses linked to climate-induced adversities.
Project Overview:
Background:
In recent years, Borno State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has been thrust into the international spotlight due to a protracted humanitarian crisis of immense proportions. This crisis stems primarily from the insurgency led by a militant group infamous for its violent extremism and targeting of civilians. The resultant conflict has precipitated widespread displacement, loss of lives, and a severe humanitarian emergency affecting millions across the region. Borno State, once known for its cultural richness and economic potential, has faced a prolonged state of emergency characterized by ongoing violence, displacement, and critical humanitarian needs. The conflict has disrupted livelihoods, decimated infrastructure, and exacerbated vulnerabilities among already marginalized communities. The consequences are stark: millions are internally displaced, facing acute food insecurity, malnutrition, and limited access to basic services such as healthcare and education.
International humanitarian agencies, local NGOs, and governmental bodies have mobilized efforts to provide lifesaving assistance and support to affected populations. However, challenges persist, including insecurity limiting humanitarian access, funding shortfalls, and the sheer scale of the crisis overwhelming response capacities.
Understanding the humanitarian context and complexities of the protracted emergency in Borno State requires delving into the intersecting factors of conflict, displacement, and resilience within a region striving for stability and recovery amidst ongoing challenges.
Objectives:
- To pilot a comprehensive approach that addresses immediate humanitarian needs, promotes sustainable development, and contributes to peacebuilding efforts in conflict-affected areas.
- To strengthen coordination and collaboration between humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding actors, fostering synergies and maximizing impact.
- To support the implementation of durable solutions for displaced populations, including return, resettlement, and local integration.
Target Areas:
The pilot project will be implemented in Borno State, focusing on regions affected by protracted conflict and displacement. These areas face significant humanitarian needs, limited access to basic services, and ongoing challenges related to peace and stability.
Proposed Activities:
- Immediate Humanitarian Assistance: Provide lifesaving assistance, including multi-purpose cash assistance (MPCA) to address multi-sectoral needs across shelter, water, and healthcare sectors, to vulnerable populations affected by conflict and displacement.
- Early Recovery and Livelihood Support, and Market System Development (MSD): Support the recovery of affected communities through livelihood interventions, vocational training, and income-generating activities, market system development aimed at producing longer-term and lasting results, building resilience and reducing dependence on aid.
- Conflict Sensitivity and Peacebuilding: Integrate conflict sensitivity approaches into programming, promoting social cohesion, dialogue, and conflict resolution mechanisms within communities.
- Durable Solutions Planning: Facilitate participatory processes for durable solutions planning, engaging with displaced populations, host communities, and relevant stakeholders to identify and address barriers to return, resettlement, and local integration.
- Capacity Building and Institutional Strengthening: Build the capacity of local actors, including government institutions, civil society organizations, and community leaders, to facilitate sustainable development and peacebuilding initiatives.
The partner is expected to co-design and implement the activities highlighted above with the targeted communities to ensure acceptance and sustainability. This should be done with technical support from the SCI Nigeria Team.
