The UChicago Global is pleased to announce its call for PhD Student and Post Doctoral Scholar Travel Grant applications, in support of short-term travel for research.

Applications are available for travel to East and South Asia; Sub-Saharan Africa; and Latin America and the Caribbean. Period of travel may vary from a few weeks to several months but must take place between June 1st, 2025 thru May 30th, 2026.

Funding Information
  • Awardees will be issued up to a $3,000 stipend to assist with travel and other related expenses.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicants must be either PhD Students or Post Doctoral Scholars at the University of Chicago.
  • Research conducted by applicants must be in support of projects with faculty oversight and/or dissertation work and that strengthen partnership with global institution(s).
  • PhD students should be in the dissertation stage, or expected to enter this stage, no later than the end of Spring Quarter 2025.
  • For postdoctoral scholars’ applications only, the faculty advisor should also certify the following:
    • The individual applying for this award is eligible to receive this funding, and if prior to disbursement of funds the individual is no longer eligible to receive this funding.
    • The postdoctoral scholar’s unit will process the payment/reimbursement of this funding upon receipt of the funds transfer from UChicago Global.
    • Eligibility of Post Doctoral Scholars to receive funds will be confirmed with divisional administrators before funds are disbursed. Grant awards may be rescinded if it is determined that the conditions of Post Doctoral Scholar’s other funding precludes them from receiving additional University funds.
Application Requirements
  • Interested PhD students and postdocs will submit a document via InfoReady with up to a 500-word summary of the following items:
    • Select region: East Asia, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America or the Caribbean
    • Request use of space at Global Center: Y/N or could be pick list of 3 centers
    • Purpose of funding request
    • Research topic addressed and methodology
    • Use of funding
    • Identify how your project supports faculty research in the region (when applicable)
    • Identify how your project supports partnerships in the region
    • Name of your principal faculty advisor and department
    • Name of partner institution
    • Proposed dates for research and travel to the target region
  • Each application must also include a separate, signed document with a paragraph (250 words) from the faculty advisor explaining their oversight of the research and, if applicable, how the research conducted during this trip will further advance their research and its importance.
  • Following completion of their travel, awardees are required to provide a 250-500 word summary, focusing on how the travel grant furthered their research, the research of the faculty member, and engagement with the partner institution. Photos are welcome.
