About The MENTOR Initiative:
The MENTOR Initiative is a UK-registered, charitable, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering from tropical diseases. We are currently implementing an Emergency Control of Malaria program in high-malarial areas of Borno State, with support from BHA-PUI, USDA, and UNF. Working closely with the Ministry of Health in Nigeria, we focus on building technical capacity and effective planning to combat malaria and other vector-borne diseases (VBDs).
Position Overview:
The MENTOR Initiative is seeking an experienced Medical Assistant to join our emergency response team in Maiduguri, Borno State. The role is critical to ensuring vulnerable communities have access to life-saving disease prevention and health services. The successful candidate will provide essential curative health consultations, manage the treatment of malnourished children, and contribute to the collection and analysis of medical data.

Duration: 6 Months (Renewable, depending on funding)

Reporting to: Medical Officer

Key Responsibilities:
1. Curative Health Consultations:
- Provide free, curative health consultations.
- Prepare all necessary materials and equipment for mobile clinics.
- Follow medical hygiene protocols during consultations.
- Actively participate in triage activities.
- Manage emergency cases in line with MENTOR protocols.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and treat all patients with respect.
2. Malnutrition and Child Health (OTP Program):
- Screen children (6-59 months) for malnutrition (MUAC, H/W, edema).
- Admit and treat children according to national nutrition protocols.
- Monitor weekly progress and adjust treatment as needed.
- Discharge cases according to national criteria.
- Refer complicated cases to a Stabilization Center.
- Complete OTP-specific forms.
3. Data Collection and Analysis:
- Collect daily medical consultation data.
- Participate in the periodic computerization and analysis of epidemiological data.
4. Reporting and Meetings:
- Prepare weekly activity reports for the team leader.
- Actively participate in MENTOR internal meetings (medical, security, etc.).
- Attend all MENTOR training sessions.
5. Additional Duties:
- Suggest improvements for mobile clinic operations.
- Assist with vehicle loading/unloading and mobile clinic setup.
- Participate in the weekly physical inventory of the mobile clinic pharmacy.
- Adapt to changes in the humanitarian environment and take on other duties as requested.
6. Security and Code of Conduct:
- Immediately report any security issues to the security focal point.
- Adhere to the MENTOR Initiative’s Code of Conduct, including Ethics and Integrity, Safeguarding, and Whistleblowing policies.
Qualifications, Experience, and Knowledge Requirements:
- Education/Training: Qualified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or equivalent.
- Experience: Experience in primary healthcare, Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM), malaria and VBD control programs, and management of medicines in mobile clinics and outreach consultations.
- Skills:
- Knowledge of clinical protocols and drug dispensing.
- Previous experience dispensing medicines in primary care settings.
- Familiarity with managing medical records and patient data.
- Strong organizational, communication, and management skills.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team.
- Languages: Fluency in English and Kanuri is mandatory; knowledge of Hausa is an advantage.
