Are you a young person from Europe, Africa or the Middle East, involved in civil society and particularly interested in media and information? If your answer is yes, then this could be the opportunity for you! Apply for the HEY Course on Media and Information Literacy – French Edition.

The HEY – Human Rights Education for Youth is a new programme launched by the North South Centre of the Council of Europe, aimed at building youth capacity on human rights through a series of online tutored courses on relevant topics for young people in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. 

Human rights education is part of SDG 4.7. to ensure that all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development and to contribute, among other, to promote a culture of global citizenship. 

Objectives
  • Improve knowledge on human rights and freedom of expression, particularly through understanding the theoretical framework (concepts and principles), as well as the role of the media, regulation and self-regulation and media ethical standards.
  • Improve skills (knowledge and abilities) in media and information literacy in the digital sphere by developing critical thinking and evaluation.
  • Strengthening resilience and e-participation in the context of information disorder and new technologies.
Topics
  • Human rights in the digital space, relevant conventions, standards and legal frameworks;
  • Freedom of expression and its limits;
  • Privacy and electronic identity management, digital footprint, digital threats;
  • Critical analysis and production of media messages, manipulation and instrumentalization of information, information crisis;
  • Analysis of algorithms and worldview, perception, knowledge and beliefs of each;
  • Digital platforms and emerging technologies, including the growing impact of artificial intelligence;
  • Participation in the digital sphere, e-participation, responsible and informed participation.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Young people (18 to 30 years old at the closing date of the call for participants), preferably engaged in civil society, including youth organizations, and with the potential to act as multipliers.
Selection Criteria
  • 40 participants will be selected for this activity. The application will serve as the basis for the selection procedure. Priority will be given to candidates active in a civil society organization or a youth organization/platform/youth-related institution.
  • Applicants must be able to:
    • communicate in French, which will be the working language of this training. 
  • This activity is open to young people from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe (with priority given to CNS member states), from African and Middle Eastern countries. The selection will be made by the North-South Center, ensuring geographical and gender balance.
