Job Summary
- We are looking for a skilled and safety-conscious Distillation Operator to operate and monitor the distillation section of the distillery.Â
- The operator will be responsible for maintaining the distillation columns, adjusting process parameters, and ensuring consistent quality and yield of ethanol/alcohol production while adhering to environmental and safety norms.
Key Responsibilities
Distillation Operations:
- Operate and monitor distillation columns (rectifier, analyzer, stripper, etc.) to maintain desired product purity (e.g., ENA, RS, fuel ethanol).
- Ensure steady feed of fermented wash into the distillation unit with proper flow and temperature control.
- Adjust process parameters such as:
- Reflux ratio
- Column temperature/pressure
- Steam flow and cooling water circulation
- Feed rate and cut points for heads, hearts, and tails
- Collect and analyze process samples (temperature, alcohol strength, impurities) regularly.
- Monitor automation systems like PLC/SCADA/DCS, and log critical process data.
- Ensure proper loading and unloading of product and residue streams (impure spirit, fusel oil, slop).
Routine Checks & Maintenance:
- Check for leakage, vibration, or abnormal pressure/temp in lines and vessels.
- Ensure proper functioning of pumps, heat exchangers, condensers, and reboilers.
- Coordinate with maintenance for timely lubrication, cleaning, and servicing.
- Perform minor troubleshooting and isolation of faulty equipment during shift.
Safety, Compliance & Housekeeping:
- Adhere to all SOPs and safety protocols including use of PPE.
- Maintain housekeeping around the distillation unit and pipelines.
- Report abnormalities like off-spec product, high temperature, pressure spikes, or product contamination immediately.
- Maintain production logs, batch reports, and shift handover documentation.
- Comply with excise documentation where applicable.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering.
- 2–5 years of experience operating distillation units in distilleries (molasses, grain, or juice-based).
- Familiarity with continuous/multi-pressure distillation systems, slop distillation, and fusel oil recovery preferred.
- Experience with SCADA/DCS systems is an added advantage.
Key Skills:
- Distillation plant operation and monitoring

- Understanding of alcohol recovery and purity specifications.
- Safety awareness and EHS compliance.
- Record keeping and communication.
Working Conditions:
- Shift-based work (day/night rotation)
- Exposure to heat, noise
- Must wear PPE (gloves, safety shoes, helmet, goggles).
- Physically active role involving rounds, valves, and control panel work.
Salary
N300,000 – N400,000 Monthly (Gross).
