We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Radiation Oncologist

Location: Kano Cancer Treatment Center, Kano
Department: Oncology / Radiotherapy Unit
Reports to: Chief Medical Director (CMD) / Head of Clinical Services
Working Hours: Full-time; may include on-call duties, evenings, or weekends
Work type: Onsite clinical role
Travel Requirements: Minimal, may include conferences, training, or outreach programs

Job Summary

  • The Radiation Oncologist will be responsible for leading the clinical aspects of radiotherapy, including patient evaluation, treatment planning, and ongoing care throughout the cancer journey.
  • This role ensures that treatment regimens are evidence-based, precise, and aligned with global best practices.
  • By working in close collaboration with medical physicists, radiation therapists, and oncology nurses, the Radiation Oncologist will play a vital role in achieving optimal patient outcomes and advancing cancer care in Nigeria.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and stage cancer patients to determine suitability for radiotherapy.
  • Prescribe radiation treatment regimens, ensuring alignment with clinical guidelines and patient-specific needs.
  • Collaborate with medical physicists and dosimetrists to develop and approve treatment plans, including advanced modalities (IMRT, VMAT, SRS, SBRT).
  • Supervise treatment delivery by radiation therapists, ensuring accuracy and patient safety.
  • Monitor patient response to treatment, manage side effects, and adjust prescriptions as needed.
  • Document clinical decisions, treatment plans, and progress notes in compliance with medical and regulatory standards.
  • Lead multidisciplinary tumor board discussions, contributing to holistic treatment strategies.
  • Stay abreast of new developments in oncology and radiotherapy and integrate innovations into practice.
  • Participate in quality assurance programs, departmental audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Train, mentor, and support junior clinicians, residents, and medical students.

Requirements
Qualifications

  • Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent) with residency training in Radiation Oncology.
  • Fellowship or board certification in Radiation Oncology (FMCR, FWACS, or international equivalent).
  • Valid practicing license from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) or eligibility for registration.
  • Strong knowledge of modern radiotherapy modalities, including IGRT, IMRT, VMAT, and stereotactic treatments.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 – 7 years post-residency clinical experience in radiation oncology.
  • Proven record of treating diverse cancers with advanced radiotherapy techniques.
  • Experience in leadership roles within multidisciplinary oncology teams is an advantage.
