We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Business Partner – People (Africa)

Location: Abuja

Role Purpose

  • The Business Partner – People provides strategic advice to leaders, helping them to think through how to manage their people to ensure that their strategic objectives are met. They are responsible for working with senior leaders and Country HR teams in their area to advise them on how to address the people challenges they face.
  • They support Christian Aid’s organisation effectiveness by developing and implementing solutions around the management and wellbeing of people and volunteers which are aligned to the organisational strategy and the specific plans and strategies of the department with which they work.
  • Business partners will attend senior country and regional management team meetings to ensure that they fully understand the strategic objectives of their internal customers and can support and advise them from a people point of view. Business partner may line manage a People Adviser / People Officer / Interns who will undertake the operational/transactional work.

Key Outcomes

  • Effective and credible working relationships with senior managers, Country HR teams and employees are developed and maintained including the staff representatives, external agencies and all third-party service providers
  • Business partners work closely with senior management teams to advise them on effective, evidence-based approaches to help their people achieve their strategy.
  • Business partners co-create solutions with the teams with which they work to ensure that people are recruited, retained, developed and managed in ways which enable them to excel and thrive wherever they are based.
  • Managers and staff guided and supported through employee relationships and effective business partnering – including restructures, redundancies, recruitment and redeployment, ensuring CA is protected from risk and complies with legislation.
  • Ensure ER cases are managed positively within agreed timescales in accordance with country legislation and CA policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring a consistent approach is taken, whilst managing the expectations of staff and managers and to challenge manager decisions if appropriate.
  • The HR service delivery of the employee life cycle managed to ensure it is of the highest quality, and ensure significant contributions are made to enhance the service continuously, thereby ensuring the achievement of Christian Aid’s corporate objectives.
  • New HR policy is developed where needed. Existing HR policy is updated and interpreted correctly and advice and support is provided to managers and employees on the practical implementation of HR policies, procedures and processes, employment legislation and best practice.
  • Country level HR teams are effectively inducted, accompanied, held accountable, coached and trained to deliver a consistently high-level customer service in their respective countries that represents the brand standard of the global people function.
  • Where appropriate People Advisers / Officers/ Interns are effectively managed, coached and developed to ensure that a high standard of customer service and care is delivered.
  • Delegated projects are successfully managed and delivered according to the People plan objectives.

Relationships
External:

  • Represents Christian Aid at external events. Liaising with Recruitment Agencies.

Internal:

  • Works closely with other staff in the Global Talent and Learning Team, Global People Team, Africa people team and the HR Community of Practice within the Africa Division and overseas.
  • Works closely with members of other regional teams such as Humanitarian, Programme Innovation and Funding, ICT Services and Divisional Leadership teams.
  • Relates to employees at all levels in Christian Aid, especially with senior managers and employees in client areas

Decision making – Budgetary/savings responsibility:

  • Advises on the most appropriate and credible advice and approach to managers and employees on legal, policy and contractual HR matters, in compliance with employment legislation and best practice. Decides the most appropriate method for recruiting staff.
  • Makes unsupervised decisions within a project cycle to ensure timely completion of projects.

Analytical skills

  • Work is varied and complex as it spans the entire employee life-cycle, putting policy into practice and implementing organisational change. It therefore requires considerable initiative and judgment in dealing with sensitive issues in compliance with employment legislation and good risk management principles.

Job Specification
Essential:

  • A recognised professional management qualification or graduate status in HR Management or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of current and forthcoming employment law.
  • A good understanding of HR policy and best practice in employment.
  • Sound knowledge of MS Office including Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of databases.
  • Substantial experience of working with senior management teams to help them devise solutions for their people to help them achieve strategy and to address the people challenges they face.
  • Substantial experience of working in a Human Resources Department in an advisory role and an understanding of how corporate objectives impact operational human resources.
  • Substantial experience in dealing with and resolving a range of complex and challenging employment issues and of managing professional relationships with managers and employees at all levels.
  • Proven experience of managing and supervising staff as a proactive team member, contributing to the success of the wider team and organisational goals.
  • Strong communication, coaching and interpersonal skills.

Desirable:

  • A qualification in training, psychometric testing or coaching.
  • An ability to speak French, Portuguese or Spanish.
  • Some experience of working within a learning and development environment.
  • Project management experience.
  • Data Analytic skills
