Job Description

  • We are looking for people who are passionate about helping refugees and people forced to flee. 
  • If you are those people, the Norwegian Refugee Council in Nigeria is looking for an enthusiastic and passionate Protection from Violence Technical Assistant to join our team in Mafa, Borno State.
  • You will be responsible for organizing and delivery of tasks in line with established procedures, agreed priorities, international standards, and relevant guiding principles

Responsibilities
Generic responsibilities:

  • Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines.
  • Assist implementation of the protection portfolio according to plan of action.
  • Implement independently protection monitoring related activities as delegated.
  • Responsible for organizing and delivery of tasks in line with established procedures, agreed priorities, international standards, and relevant guiding principles.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of protection, in order to be most effective in supporting the team.
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management.
  • Ensure proper filing of documents.
  • Promote and share ideas for technical improvement.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain trust relationships with target communities.
  • Conduct community-level protection needs assessments and protection monitoring to identify and document critical and emerging threats to safety, dignity and well-being of women, men, girls and boys, as well as protective factors and community resources. 
  • Contribute to the identification and internal referral of individuals/households with specific needs and/or vulnerabilities, with special focus on children, youth, women and other at-risk groups.
  • Support the development of gender- and age-sensitive awareness materials on key protection related issues.
  • Raise the awareness on key protection related issues among beneficiaries and target communities, as well as key external stakeholders, in close collaboration with concerned CC Teams and specialized actors. If relevant, provide beneficiaries and target communities with information and orientation about existing services and how to access them.
  • Work in collaboration with the Case Management Officer and Protection Team to undertake detailed assessments of beneficiaries.
  • Work in collaboration with the Case Management Officer and Protection Team to prepare intervention plans, including care plans and case summaries following a detailed assessment of each protection case.
  • Ensure that all data and information pertaining to protection monitoring are handled in strict confidence, and in line with applicable data protection and information sharing protocols.
  • Identify vulnerable beneficiaries with special needs and suggest the best type of assistance for each individual case tailored to the specific needs of the case (safe referrals to specialized actors).
  • Assist in compilation of information and reports on achievements. Report internally to the Case Management Officer on weekly and monthly achievements; and for urgent cases, on a daily basis.

Generic Professional Competencies

  • University Degree in a relevant discipline (Law, Political Science, Social Science, Psychology, or any other relevant education profile
  • Experience from working directly with affected/local communities within an international or local organization in a humanitarian context.
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts.
  • Previous experience in conducting community-level protection needs assessments and protection monitoring is desirable but not essential.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of international standards, and protection fundamental concepts and guiding principles, is desirable but not essential.
  • Ability to gather, record and manage data and information from different sources.
  • Mastery of IT tools (MS Office package, internet, e-mail, etc.).
  • Some knowledge of English.

Context/ Specific skills, knowledge and experience: 

  • Knowledge of the context in the geographical area of responsibility is desirable but not essential.
  • Knowledge of the local languages.
