About the project:
This project, funded by the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA) through the International Organization for Migration (IOM), focuses on a 3-month emergency flood response in GGASS Camp located in Mafa and Benishek, Kaga Local Government Area (LGA), Maiduguri. The primary aim is to deliver immediate WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) support to the affected populations in these LGAs.
Position Overview:
The Hygiene Promotion Officer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring hygiene promotion activities within GPON’s WASH programs. This role involves working closely with communities to raise awareness about good hygiene practices, reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, and ensure the sustainability of WASH interventions. The Hygiene Promotion Officer will collaborate with local authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders to drive behaviour change and improve project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Hygiene Promotion Implementation:
- Plan, coordinate, and implement hygiene promotion activities in target communities, including awareness campaigns, workshops, and training sessions.
- Develop and deliver culturally appropriate hygiene messages and materials to educate communities on key hygiene practices such as handwashing, safe water handling, and sanitation.
- Facilitate community-led initiatives that encourage behavior change and the adoption of improved hygiene practices.
- Community Mobilization and Engagement:
- Engage with community members, leaders, and local organizations to promote active participation in hygiene promotion activities.
- Establish and support hygiene promotion committees or groups within the community to champion hygiene practices and monitor progress.
- Work closely with schools, health facilities, and other community institutions to integrate hygiene promotion into their operations.
- Capacity Building:
- Conduct training for community health workers, volunteers, and other key stakeholders on hygiene promotion techniques and approaches.
- Develop and deliver training modules that enhance the knowledge and skills of community members in maintaining healthy hygiene practices.
- Provide ongoing support and mentorship to local partners and community groups involved in hygiene promotion.
- Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Monitor and assess the effectiveness of hygiene promotion activities, using tools such as surveys, focus group discussions, and observation.
- Collect and analyze data on hygiene practices and behavior change to inform program adjustments and improvements.
- Prepare and submit regular reports on hygiene promotion activities, outcomes, and challenges to the WASH Program Manager.
- Collaboration and Coordination:
- Coordinate with other WASH team members to ensure the integration of hygiene promotion into broader WASH interventions, such as water supply and sanitation.
- Collaborate with health, education, and nutrition sectors to ensure a holistic approach to improving community health.
- Participate in WASH coordination meetings, working groups, and forums to share experiences and promote best practices in hygiene promotion.
- Compliance and Reporting:
- Ensure that all hygiene promotion activities comply with donor requirements, organizational policies, and national/international standards.
- Maintain accurate records of hygiene promotion activities, materials distributed, and community engagement efforts.
- Prepare case studies, success stories, and other documentation to highlight the impact of hygiene promotion activities.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Social Sciences, or a related field. A Master’s degree is an added advantage.
- Experience:Â At least 3-5 years of experience in hygiene promotion, health education, or community mobilization, preferably within the NGO sector.
- Technical Skills:Â Strong understanding of hygiene promotion principles, behavior change communication, and public health approaches.
- Community Engagement:Â Proven experience in working with communities to implement health or hygiene-related activities.
- Communication:Â Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey messages clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
- Analytical Skills:Â Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data related to hygiene practices and behavior change.
- Language Skills:Â Proficiency in English (both written and spoken). Knowledge of [local language] is an advantage.
- Flexibility:Â Willingness to travel frequently to field sites and work in challenging environments.
Salary and conditions: In accordance with GPON Terms of Employment. The income will be subject to statutory deductions as per applicable Nigerian laws. The employee is responsible for the tax returns
