Job Title: Senior Environmental Specialist

Location: Lagos, Nigeria
Reporting to: Head of Environment, HSSE, Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals

Job Purpose

  • Having responsibilities across multiple sites requires a key requirement of demonstrating a proven ability to provide clear strategic direction for Environmental Management.
  • This entails continuously improving environmental performance, facilitating compliance with DIL Group HSSE and Sustainability Policies, Standards, and Guidelines, as well as promoting and supporting industry compliance and regulatory environmental standards.
  • Additionally, it is crucial to ensure effective implementation of all EMS programs, procedures, training, work practices, and controls.

Job Responsibilities

  • Identify and gain understanding of the environmental issues impacting the DPRP, its products, suppliers, contractors, and the broader industry. Develop appropriate plans to address these issues.
  • Ensure the environmental attributes of suppliers and products align with Dangote’s policy commitments and other relevant requirements. This includes occasional supplier visits.
  • Collaborate with other departments and functions (e.g., Operations, Marine, Engineering, HR & Admin, Security, Risk Management) to maximize commercial advantage from the environmental attributes of products and services.
  • Provide necessary assistance and guidance to contractors and end-users, including regular customer visits.
  • Work in cooperation with existing communications channels to create PR/communications related to the Group’s environmental activities. This includes internal and external communications, such as articles or comments in the press, managing environmental content on the website, and paper-based publications.
  • Develop and maintain relevant environmental management systems/certifications, etc.
  • Coordinate the vendor sourcing and selection process.
  • Design and deliver environmental training for Dangote staff, contractors, and other relevant individuals.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including environmental groups and PaperlinX.
  • Provide input into the development of broader sustainability/Social Performance/CSR policies across the Dangote BUs.
  • Take primary responsibility for coordinating the response to an environmental crisis.
  • Perform any other duties as required by the Head of Department.
  • Working with HSSE Team to:
    • Agree on leading and lagging KPIs that are appropriate and sufficient for PMP EMA and aligned globally.
    • Establish annual plans for improving HSE.
    • Monitor leading and lagging KPIs and provide updates to senior Operational Management, particularly regarding Corrective Action management.
    • Ensure robust environmental investigations and follow-up processes are in place for all sites.
    • Demonstrate strong leadership skills in driving accountability within operational teams through effective communication to ensure compliance and encourage excellence in HSE.
    • Provide strategic vision for the future of DPRP, identifying areas of weakness and ensuring action plans are implemented, including involvement in and active encouragement of Capital Planning for HSE-related improvements.
  • Prepare EMS reports for the Dangote Refinery Leadership Team, external stakeholders, and incorporate any recommendations or comments arising from the report review.
  • Work closely with respective plants/teams to implement the appropriate Environmental Management Strategy. Maintain ongoing interaction with Refinery HSE colleagues to ensure Group HSSE alignment and sharing of best practices and learnings.

Requirements
Academic & Professional:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Science, Engineering, or an Environmental-related discipline is required, with a preference for candidates with an advanced degree.
  • Membership in the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment or its equivalent, or membership in an internationally recognized environmental professional body, is desirable.

Experience:

  • Minimum 8 – 10 years of experience in Environment Management, including at least 6 years in a supervisory position
  • Proficiency in Environment Management Systems, Environmental Discharges, Incident Investigation, HSE Auditing Techniques, and more
  • Hands-on expertise dealing with environmental issues
  • Previous experience collaborating with contractors
  • Collaborative work experience across multiple sites and functions
  • Prior experience working with suppliers
  • Proven ability to create effective PR/communications
  • Background in the manufacturing industry
  • Ability to manage projects within given budgets
  • Experience interacting with the press and environmental groups
  • Strong familiarity with various environmental concerns, specifically those relevant to the paper industry.
  • Proficient comprehension of the business environment.
  • Understanding of the structure and offerings of the Manufacturing / Oil & Gas industry.
