Green Habitat Initiative (GHI) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation promoting the achievement of SDG 6 (clean water) and SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities) in Nigeria. Incorporated in 2016 in Nigeria, GHI has worked in various sectors such as environmental sustainability, urban planning, sustainable urban development, urban agriculture, social urban innovations, architecture, WASH, solid waste management, recycling activities, environmental activism, etc.

GHI has worked with various local and international partners such as VINNOVA Group Sweden, USAID, French Institute Nigeria, Energies 2050, Embassies of Germany, France and Czech, The Water Mechanics, Baze University, One Environment, Stop Don’t Drop, etc. to deliver its projects.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Gender Specialist

Locations: Abuja (FCT) and Kaduna
Employment Type: Contract, Full-time
Tenure: 12-months
Anticipated Start Date: May 1st 2024
Location by percentage: Abuja 65%, Kaduna State 35%

Background

  • Green Habitat Initiative is planning to pilot a small-scale solar-powered hydroponics system as a strategic solution to address the convergence of issues stemming from climate change, insecurity, and food security in Kaduna State, Northwest Nigeria. Hydroponics is expected to reduce reliance on unpredictable weather patterns, especially erratic rainfall due to climate change, and can be operated within controlled environments, shielding farmers from the vagaries of violent conflicts and insecurity that have disrupted traditional farming practices.
  • The aim of this project is to enhance sustainable agriculture and community resilience by introducing functional hydroponics systems, providing secured livelihoods, imparting agricultural and technical expertise, offering localised adaptation solutions, and fostering climate-resilient practices, ultimately contributing to improved food security and reduced conflict risks in the target community.
  • As such, the Green Habitat Initiative (GHI) is currently seeking to engage a Gender Expert on a contract basis to support a climate-smart agricultural project.

Role Summary

  • The Gender Expert will work closely with the program manager and Technical Leads to ensure that principles of gender equality and social inclusion are integrated into all aspects of project design and implementation. S/he will provide programmatic and technical support to the project team, government counterparts, and other stakeholders on the effective integration of GESI considerations, specifically emphasising the equity and inclusion of marginalised groups such as women, youths, and PLWDs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct gender analysis and planning, ensuring that project activities consider and address the specific needs and challenges of different genders and marginalised groups.
  • Work closely with the program manager to ensure the strategic integration of gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) considerations into all project design and implementation aspects.
  • Interact with local stakeholders to collect and evaluate data related to gender dynamics, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the social context.

Minimum Requirements

  • You must have an advanced degree (Master’s and/or Ph.D., etc) in a relevant field to qualify for this.
  • You must have extensive experience conducting GESI assessments and analysis.

Qualifications and Required Experiences:

  • Master’s Degree in Sociology, Anthropology, Gender, or other relevant education is a requirement.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in the field of gender equality and gender mainstreaming is a requirement.
  • Formal training in gender analysis and gender planning and demonstrated expertise in mainstreaming gender in projects and programs is a requirement.
  • Excellent abilities to interact with local stakeholders, collect and evaluate data, and transform the information into high-quality documentation tangible to the target audience are highly desired.
  • Experience with the use of project management software (e.g., Clickup, Slack, etc) is desirable.
  • Hausa Language skills are a requirement.

  • Excellent interpersonal, consensus-building, and negotiating skills are essential.
  • Sustainability Knowledge: Knowledge of the sustainability agenda and its relationship with business. Must possess a strong interest in driving corporate action on sustainable development. Must have an international and innovative outlook and mindset.
  • Computer/Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Experience with the use of project management software (e.g., Clickup, Slack, etc) is desirable.
  • Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view. Establishes and maintains productive relationships with key decision makers by gaining their trust and respect; Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions; responds to questions, concerns, and requests from executives; meets timeline for delivery of services to a client.
  • Research and Analytical Skills: Exceptional ability to conduct research effectively and assemble this information in a timely manner. Proven critical thinker with strong analytical skills. Ability to explain complex information in a clear, concise, and practical manner. Exceptional attention to detail that demonstrates an ability to evaluate complex information or problems to find a precise and digestible solution.
  • Communication and Language Skills: Advanced communication skills, including outstanding written and spoken English skills that enable him/her to communicate professionally and confidently. Ability to interact with a broad set of businesses and present over the phone, virtually, and in person. Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others, and responds appropriately. Ability to communicate persuasively in written form to help engage at scale. Asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest in having two-way communication. Exceptional attention to detail, including tailoring language, tone, and content to match various audiences. Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills. Advanced knowledge of report writing
  • Ability to engage and manage strategic stakeholders, including government, implementing partners, academia, and the private sector.
