Médecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international, private, non-governmental, non-profit humanitarian organization. Our organization offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters, to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. We have been working in Nigeria since February 1996. A Memorandum of Understanding between Médecins Sans Frontieres and the Federal Government of Nigeria facilitates this. We are at present co-operating with the Federal Ministry of Health, State and Local Government departments of health on various health projects.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Health Promoter Supervisor
Location: Talata Mafara, Zamfara

Job Type: 10 Months Definite Contract (with the possibility of renewal)
Main objective and Responsibilities of the Position
- In close collaboration with the Nurse Nursing Activity Manager- Outreach, HP IEC Activities Manager & Medical Team leader implementing and supervising educational campaigns according to MSF values, standards and procedures in order to increase awareness of the targeted population and to promote prevention and treatment of diseases in the project area.
Accountabilities
- In close collaboration with the Nursing Activity Manager, participating in the definition and update of the Project HP/IEC strategy and identifying indicators in order to monitor HP activities, results, and achievements. Supporting the HP manager in organizing and carrying out assessments and research on the impact of HP activities and identifying and reporting the constraints, difficulties or strength points of the HP strategy inside and outside the medical structures and Hospital (ITFC) in order to reinforce the link between the communities and the project.
- Providing support in selecting and developing quality pedagogical communication strategies towards the community and Hospital. Planning information campaigns, including targets, objectives, methods and goals in order to increase awareness among the targeted population.
- Informing, according to protocols, community members and identified risk groups (prisons, army, sexual workers, etc.) about health related issues.
- Organizing health awareness sessions for MSF’s medical and non-medical staff.
- Identifying key actors (local authorities, local NGOs, traditional healers, formal or informal authorities) and being the focal point for the networking in order to support the dissemination of health information of the target population, Organization acceptance monitoring and be the point of reference for the relation and networking with these subjects.
- Organizing, training, and supervising the HP team in terms of planning and organizing their work, supporting, evaluating and coaching of personnel, collecting reports and reporting the activities of each health worker and regularly visiting communities that are under his/her responsibility.
- Supervising, in close collaboration with the HR department, the HR associated processes (recruitment, training/induction, evaluation, potential detection, development and communication) of the staff under his/her responsibility in order to ensure both the sizing and the amount of knowledge required.
- Ensuring cleanliness of IEC (information, education and communication) areas.
- Collecting and reporting to the medical team any information linked to the health situation of the population and the patient.
MSF Section / Context Specific Accountabilities
- Plan, organize and supervise the implementation of all health promotion in the community & hospital according to the medical strategy.
- Develop work plan for Health Promoters with well-defined activities per person e.g. Data collection, Health Education Session etc.
- Identify, develop & translate in local language (when necessary) and provide IEC materials to the Health Promoters for usage during community awareness on malnutrition, malaria, pneumonia, acute watery diarrhea, wash and sanitation and available services at ITFC/IPD in Talata Mafara General Hospital
- Establish strong community engagement platforms by ensuring the community leaders, caregivers with none or malnourished children and the general community are fully involved in the intervention.
- Identify challenges encountered in the community and discuss with Nurse Activity manager, Flying HPCE Manager and or medical team leader to establish solutions and timely resolve the issues.
- Ensure smooth and consistent collaboration with other partners working in the community and Hospital including Ministry of Health throughout the intervention period.
- Facilitate a strong linkage between the community HP and ITFC/IPD; ATFC, TPHCS and ICCM teams by ensuring that all referred children have reported at the ITFC
- Plan, organize and supervise the implementation of all health promotion at the ITFC according to the medical strategy.
- Identify and provide IEC materials to the Health Promoters for usage during health education sessions on malnutrition & other topics at the ITFC in Talata Mafara.
- Ensure the MSF services’ provision is using at all time the patient centered approach by collecting and sharing on weekly basis both community and direct clients feedback (through community meeting, Focus group discussion, patients/caregivers satisfaction interview, community/users perception, etc).
- Supervise directly the Health Promoters Officers and community Health Promoters during the implementation of all activities assigned including health education sessions, accurate documentation of data using MSF standard tools.
- Supervise Health Promoters Officers in the delivery of health education sessions on malnutrition malaria, pneumonia, acute watery diarrhea, wash and sanitation, vaccination, and common outbreak prone disease by checking the quality and accuracy of health messages using the standard supervision checklist
- Monitor other activities of Health Promoters Officers, provide timely support on-site and/or document the observations for discussion at the end of activity.
- Organize weekly meetings with Health Promoters Officers to discuss activities of the week (achievements versus planning, share challenges and discuss possible solutions with support of the Nursing activity managers, the Medical team leader and or Flying HPCE Manager
- Develop, discuss and implement SOP for different new activity related to Community engagement and Health Promotion at both community and Hospital.
- Share data collection tools with Health Promoters on weekly basis and make timely request in-case of need
- Thoroughly check, consolidate and report data on weekly basis and/or as required with support from the Medical team leader and Flying HPCE Manager
- Systematically, file all the data tools (used & unused data tools) and submit the same whenever required.
Requirements (Qualifications)
To apply for this role applicants MUST meet the following criteria:
Education:
- Diploma in Health Promotion, Nursing. Public Health, Social Work or Community Health
Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years working experience in MSF or other NGOs, Government in health promotion activities. Community MUAC screening/nutrition prevention activities, Behaviour change communication and community engagement’s experience on vaccination and during outbreak disease is essential. Experience in supervision is required and an added advantage. Experience working within Talata Mafara would be prioritized.
Languages:
- Very good command of English language and Hausa is essential (Written and verbal)
Knowledge:
- Computer literacy (word, excel, internet) is essential.
